John Mueller from Google’s Search Relations team shared some insights lately into the use of AI in content creation and how it will impact on SEO. AI is growing at a rapid pace and this is the reason it is important today to understand how to use it effectively.
Many worry that using AI in translating content could negatively impact website SEO. Mueller explained that there is no need for specific labels or markup for AI-translated pages. However, the focus should be to create good quality translations. If the translations are well-done and suitable for the audience, the web pages can be indexed by search engines. If the translations lack appropriate standard, it is better to use the “noindex” robots meta tag. This will prevent the pages from being indexed. He emphasized to go beyond just word-for-word translation. It is better to focus on localization.
Mueller also talked about using AI tools for drafting content. Many content creators are using AI to generate initial drafts and thereafter refining it by human editors. He stressed that the overall quality is what matters most to Google. AI can assist with spelling and formulation. It does not produce high-quality content automatically. Hence, he recommended to refer Google’s guidelines on AI-generated content. He suggested seeking feedback from independent third-party reviewers. They can ensure whether the content meets high standards.
Mueller repeatedly emphasized on quality and this suggests that Google may be skeptical about fully relying on AI for content creation. Hence, it can be said that AI can be a useful tool, but it should be used carefully. Human oversight is important. The key is to prioritize on quality, relevance and of course adherence to Google’s guidelines.
