Google AI Overviews Appear in Only 7-9% of Queries, Reddit Loses Prominence

A significant reduction in AI Overviews is being noticed lately in Google’s search results. The shift is an aftermath of growing concerns over the accuracy and reliability of AI-generated answers. Criticism highlighted instances where users received incorrect or potentially harmful information. Google reevaluated its approach thereafter.

SEOClarity and SERanking stated that the presence of AI Overviews has dropped down to as low as 7.6% of searches. SERanking reports a sharp decline from 64% to 8.71%. SEOClarity witnessed in its study a drop from 17.4% to 7.6%. The decline follows after public commitment of Google to improve the quality of AI Overviews.

Reddit was once a prominent source cited within AI Overviews. With the latest shift the platform is witnessing reduced traffic. It has been now replaced by websites like runnersworld.com and healthline.com. Hence, a shift in Google’s algorithmic preferences is being noticed.

SERanking highlights that a majority (84.72%) of AI Overviews link to domains featured in the top 10 organic search results. Moreover, the overviews often coexist with featured snippets. It aligns citations nearly 62% of the time. AI Overviews span 4,342 characters and are frequently accompanied by advertisements, appearing alongside them in 87% of instances.

SEOClarity further highlights that the AI Overviews are prevalent in industries such as Home Warranty, Technology and Social Media. It is notably absent in local keyword searches.

Well, Google is continuing its development towards becoming an answer engine rather than a conventional search platform. This means that businesses and brands must adapt to the evolving search dynamics. The decreasing visibility of AI Overviews highlights the importance of aligning digital strategies with Google’s evolving algorithms. Even though Google is facing some significant early challenges, but its commitment to refining AI Overviews signals a transformative phase in search technology.
